Maarten Bavinck is a marine geographer attached to the University of Amsterdam, specialized in South Asia and with an interest in issues of legal pluralism and governance. He has conducted numerous research projects on fisheries conflict, customary institutions, food security and legal pluralism. Most of his own research work has concentrated on the coast of Tamil Nadu, India, and the Northern Province, Sri Lanka. Aside from this, he has led research projects in South Africa and Ghana. He is co-director of the Centre for Maritime Research (MARE) and chairman of the board of the International Collective in Support of Fishworkers (ICSF).
