Amongst texts of Vaiṣṇava Tamil devotion, the Tiruppāvai is considered one of the most popular and representative of the genre, describing on the one hand with utmost clarity a specific mode of Viṣṇu worship and, on the other, the significant aspect of his omnipotence and majesty. It has been abundantly commented upon and translated several times into Sanskrit. The author, the poetess Āṇṭāḷ, is believed to have lived in the 9th century A.D. The text expresses, as in the case of all Tamil Vaiṣṇava devotional poetry of the Āl̠vār-s, a devotion and theological conception which predates the development of Vaiṣṇava bhakti in the western, eastern, and northern regions of India by several centuries. Parmi les textes de la dévotion Vaiṣṇava tamoule, le Tiruppāvai est l’un des plus populaires et des plus caractéristiques, évoquant clairement à la fois un mode spécifique du culte de Viṣṇu et la conception majeure de son omnipotence et de sa grandeur. Il a été abondamment commenté et plusieurs fois traduit en sanskrit. Son auteur, la poétesse Āṇṭāl, aurait vécu au IXe siècle. Il exprime, avec toute l’oeuvre des dévots Vaiṣṇates tamouls, les Āl̠vār-s, une dévotion et une conception théologique qui anticipent de plusieurs siècles les développements de la bhakti Vaiṣṇava dans l’Ouest, l’Est et le Nord de l’Inde.
