The book is first a resurvey of the famous inscriptions of Uttaramērūr, around the sabhā of the village and its functioning. The most original contribution deals with the theoretical reconstruction of the layout of the village, according to āgamas and vāstu śāstra in the distribution of temples and space, erection and iconography of temples, and the projection of mythology and king’s paraphernalia on the patterns of roads and irrigation channels. It confirms the political organisation of the agraharam under the sabhā and ur at least till the 13th century when Tiruppulivan̠am continues the local history, probably under Śaiva Veḷḷala’s dominance! The Sanskrit local purāṇa and some more recent documents or local traditions add legends to an already fascinating history.

Ce livre est tout d’abord un réexamen des fameuses inscriptions d’Uttaramērūr, autour de la sabhā du village et de son fonctionnement. La contribution la plus originale traite de la reconstruction théorique de l’agencement du village conformément aux āgamas et au vāstu śāstra, en termes de distribution des temples et de l’espace, d’érection et d’iconographie des temples et de projection de la mythologie et des titulatures royales sur les dénominations des routes et des canaux d’irrigation. Il confirme l’organisation politique de l’agraharam sous l’autorité de la sabhā et de l’ūr au moins jusqu’au XIIIe siècle, quand Tiruppulivan̠am prend le relais de l’histoire locale, probablement sous la domination des Śaiva Veḷḷala ! Le purāṇa local sanskrit et certains autres documents ou traditions locales ajoutent leurs légendes à une histoire déjà fascinante.
