This is a critical edition and annotated translation of the first 6 (of 12) chapters of the Kashmirian Bhaṭṭa Rāmakaṇṭha II's influential, hitherto unpublished tenth-century Sanskrit commentary on the Kiraṇatantra, a scripture of the Śaiva Siddhānta. The Kiraṇatantra in fact contains 64 chapters and touches on every aspect of the cult: its theology, its yoga, its observances, and its rituals and all that relates to them, including architecture and iconography. Rāmakaṇṭha's commentary, however, covers only the first portion of the text, which deals with the cult's doctrines. The introduction presents evidence about the lineage of Rāmakaṇṭha, attempts a chronological arrangement of his works, and discusses the canon of the Śaiva Siddhānta as it existed in the tenth century. The apparatus presents the readings of the 4 surviving South Indian manuscripts of the commentary and of 27 manuscripts of the tantra from Nepal and South India.

Cet ouvrage est une édition critique et une traduction annotée des 6 premiers chapitres (sur 12) du commentaire sanskrit de Bhaṭṭa Rāmakaṇṭha II, originaire du Cachemire, sur le Kiraṇatantra, livre de l’école sivaïte appelée Saiva Siddhanta. Ce commentaire important du Xe siècle est édité ici pour la première fois. Le Kiraṇatantra comprend 64 chapitres et touche tous les aspects du culte: théologie, yoga, observances, rites et tout ce qui s’y rapporte, y compris l’architecture et l’iconographie. Le commentaire de Ramakantha couvre seulement la première partie du texte, qui traite de la doctrine. L’introduction présente de nouveaux témoignages sur la lignée de Rāmakaṇṭha et tente une présentation chronologique de ses oeuvres qui subsistent. Elle donne en outre le texte du fragment qui nous est resté de son Sarvagamapramanyopanyasa, et discute le canon des tantras du Śaiva Siddhānta qui ont survécu et que nous pouvons imaginer avoir été accessibles à Rāmakaṇṭha. L’apparat critique donne les lectures des quatre seuls manuscrits du commentaire. Ceux-ci proviennent de l’Inde du Sud. Dans un registre séparé, il recense les lectures de 27 manuscrits du Kiraṇatantra provenant du Népal et de l’Inde du Sud.
