The South Indian Vernonieae consisting of 5 genera and 41 out of 45 species have been critically studied primarily from the standpoint of palynology. In addition, certain histological aspects of florets, achenes, pappus, carpopodium, corolla vasculature, trichomes, and crystals have also been studied to find out the correlations between palynolgical and histological data and to select characters of taxonomic significance. An attempt has been made here to correlate the pollen characters of the south Indian Vernonieae with the major systems of classification. This work is richly illustrated with photographs, Camera Lucida drawings, Light micrographs, Scanning and Transmission Electron micrographs. Pollen micrographs in 42 plates (LM: 5; SEM: 28 & TEM: 7) are accompanied by legends.

A botanist-turned-palynologist (since 1970, at the IFP), the author G. Vasanthy has published on various aspects of palynolgy, in collaboration with eminent palynologists. Her contributions published by the IFP are: Pollen of the South Indian hills (TSST n° 15, IFP) and Pollen grains of South Indian trees, V1.0. A user-friendly multimedia identification software [CD-ROM], co-authored with P. Grard (CE 45, IFP).

Les Vernonieæ de l’Inde du Sud, qui regroupent 5 genres et 41 espèces représentées dans les herbiers, ont principalement été étudiés du point de vue de la palynologie. En complément, certains aspects histologiques des fleurs, des caractéristiques des akènes (fruits) et la vascularisation de la corolle ont aussi été étudiés pour rechercher des corrélations entre les données palynologiques et histologiques et pour sélectioner les caractères ayant une signification taxonomique. Une tentative a été ici faite pour corréler les caractères du pollen de Vernonieæ d’Inde du Sud avec le système général de classification. Ce travail est richement illustré par des photographies, Camera Lucida drawings, Light micrographs, Scanning et Transmission Electron micrographs. Des pollen micrographs sur 42 plaques (LM: 5; SEM: 28 & TEM: 7) sont accompagnés de légendes.

Botaniste et palynologue (depuis 1970 à l’IFP), l’auteure G. Vasanthy a publié des travaux sur divers aspects de la palynologie, en collaboration avec de nombreux palynologues célèbres.
