Workshop on overindebtedness

A workshop on “Overindebtedness and its effect on village economy of Pazhaverkadu region” jointly organised by the French Institute of Pondicherry (IFP) and the Madras Social Service Society, was held at the IFP on March 23, 2009.

This workshop had as an objective to address the issue of over-indebtedness in 48 villages located in Tamil Nadu around Pulicat Lake. Among the topics that were discussed were the mechanisms of “taking out a loan in order to repay a loan”, Conflict between economic and social priorities, “Over-lending”, Overconfidence in the joint guarantee, and the question of employment and income to which indebtedness and over-indebtedness are directly correlated.
