Conference on The Commercialization of Local Knowledge

Home > News

Local knowledge, sometimes perceived as a resource to preserve and protect, is the object of national and international commercial interests. This conference explores the processes of commodification and circulation of local knowledge, by confronting different levels of analysis proposed by anthropology, colonial history and history of sciences. The objective is to put into perspective issues related to identity, boundaries and value, in the fields of knowledge on medicine, art, astrology or even agriculture at different local and global scales.

In order to do so, a group of international specialists will meet at the French Institute of Pondicherry (IFP) from November 5th to 6th, 2008. This conference, coordinated by Caterina Guenzi (EHESS/IFP), Sarah Hodges and Stéphane Van Damme (Warwick), is co-organized by the IFP, the University of Warwick and the Centre for Indian and South Asian Studies (CEIAS), with the support of the IFP, the Warwick Asian Fund and the British Academy.
